Heal and Be Well!

On Wednesday I experienced the opportunity of sharing higher education opportunities with employees of Mount Sinai Hospital. I felt blessed to share resources with professionals that serve to care for the well being of so many. Thanks so much again to the Mount Sinai Hospital Diversity and Inclusion Council and 1199 SEIU

Mount Sinai Diversity Council Co-chairs Patricia Orlieb and Suzanne Young -Mercer.
During this engaging event I met Hayley Gardiner of Mount Sinai Center for Spirituality and Health. I was intrigued by this area of the hospital and went over for more information.

Hayley Gardiner of Mount Sinai Center for Spirituality and Health

Hayley kindly offered me lavender oil for my wrists. It was refreshing to breathe in the aroma. It was cleansing. Healthline.org defines Aromatherapy as a holistic healing treatment that uses natural plant extracts to promote health and well-being. Sometimes it’s called essential oil therapy. Aromatherapy uses aromatic essential oils medicinally to improve the health of the body, mind, and spirit. It enhances both physical and emotional health.

Hayley also gave me a pocket card which folds. It has lily pads on the outside cover. Inside was the following 20 second Self Care Exercise:

  • Breathe, pause, breathe again, Let your shoulders relax. Let you jaw relax. Let your feet relax
  • Focus on a water lily for 7 seconds.
  • Take another deep breath, and slowly breathe it out saying to yourself: "May I be well, may I be at peace, may I be at ease."

On the other side of the card was the Serenity Prayer
God, grant me the serenity
To accept the things I cannot change,
The courage to change the things I can,
And the wisdom to know the difference.

How pleasing to the senses are lavender oil, a short self care practice and a prayer. Which ever you choose for your spirit to be well is simply awesome!  "We know that diagnosis and treatment can affect your spirit or soul as much as your body. As multi -faith chaplains, we provide support to patients, families, and staff of all belief systems." Hayley had directed me to the website for more information as I looked over the centers brochure.

"Mount Sinai’s chaplains help people of all faiths find meaning, healing, hope, and comfort while experiencing the challenges of life. We seek to provide clarity for decision-making, inspiration, and release from stress by facilitating a feeling of connection to a Higher Power, God, the Universe, the Creator, or that which is beyond us all. Ultimately we hope to help people achieve a sense of balance and inner peace."

There are two chapels as well at the following locations:

The Hatch Interdenominational Chapel

Located at Guggenheim Pavilion, First Floor West, 1190 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10029
The Peck Jewish Chapel Located at Guggenheim Pavilion, Second Floor West, 1190 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10029
I was excited to share this post as they also have community Engagement. "At the Center for Spirituality and Health, we operate the Health through Early Awareness and Learning (HEAL) Project, which has helped congregations get the word out about detecting early signs of health complications. Project HEAL helps educate, empower, and connect YOU with resources to get screened for your health."

On the website one will also learn of a Multi-faith Initiative on Community and Health Program.
In this initiative there's a facilitation of health education programs, wellness events, health screenings, and members of community and faith-based organizations are helped in gaining access to health care throughout the Mount Sinai Health System. "Mindful of the social determinants of health, we work to decrease health care disparities. We strive to promote health while respecting the myriad faith traditions in a cultural competent manner."

How faithful and inspiring! The Tea at MEC!

Left: Dr. Patricia Ramsey, President Medgar Evers College and Right: Yours Truly, Melanie Lewis  Hello ThresholdWorld Fam, It’s been a while so we’re gonna start off with some flavorful news to warm your spirit.  Sunday, August 28th was the Medgar Evers College (MEC) Pre-Inaugural High Tea Fundraiser in honor of the Sixth President, Dr. Patricia Ramsey.  President Ramsey is the first female and scientist to serve at the college. You’ve got to read her fascinating bio of accomplishments.  https://www.mec.cuny.edu/office-of-the-president/  While contributing to the history she really just wants to make a difference to students and the school community.  She also has cool ties to the schools namesake in  her family tree. Her very own cousin Curtis Harris, served to make sure Medgar Evers legacy was protected back in Mississippi years ago. She shared these sentiments to those of us in attendance as we sipped our tea and tipped our hats in her honor. Speaking of fashion  Michael Kors was on

Honeydew Holistics!

Hello World,  I recently had the pleasure of introducing Alicia Hudson, owner of Honeydew Holistics , for a women's history month event at Borough of Manhattan Community College . Ms. Hudson gave a very informative presentation on womb wellness, to a diverse audience that continued to want more! I followed up by booking a Yoni Steaming, the main service provided at her new shop located in DUMBO (Down Under The Manhattan Bridge Overpass) at 53 Bridge St. in Brooklyn, NY. - A little bit of history : The neighborhoods of DUMBO and Vinegar Hill (named differently in the 1800's) housed a  free black community. Brooklyn's anti-slavery movement began in 1810 and there were black-owned businesses in this very area.  Yours truly, Melanie on site. 53 Bridge St. Ms. Hudson referenced that Essence Magazine had an event in the area some time ago which introduced her to the community. She loves her magazines as they've been the source of much inspiration in her life and business. It

Womb Wellness, Education and Celebration!

Greetings, In May of 2003, I was 7 months pregnant and 10 days shy of my college graduation.  I’d be the first in my family to complete a degree at the time. My mom attended college, yet as a wife and mother in the 1960's, she didn't receive the support needed to continue. Her act in going inspired me. I was filled with so much promise, yet I'd need to develop a new plan. How would I care for a new life, while navigating a career in the real world? Naturally, I continued on with life discovering various paths, yet carrying so much in my womb unknowingly. Joy, Trauma and DisEase included. ——-Fast forward 17 years later ….my daughter would make me aware of a brand which would take me on journey to womb wellness.  Watch as I have a conversation with Genyii of Ahura Apothecary . Genyii is a certified mindfulness and womb wellness coach, holistic birthing doula, mother, community herbalist and owner/founder of Ahura Apothecary. In the video we discuss our journey to the sacre
