Happy August 1, 2018!

Yes, I had a plan. I'm on an instagram and facebook vacation. Less social media and more writing on purpose. I feel that many times the black community is usually the last to know what's happening in our communities. So I started sharing posts on my instagram and sometimes to my facebook but a larger medium was needed. So I'm back on the blog with purpose.

Writing makes me happy. I got a degree in this too!- 'With all rights, privileges, thereunto and appertaining' lol. But if my subject and verb don't agree you can say so. I'm still gonna write gonna though and get better as I do. Feedback is better than fatback! I feel that this is what is right and what I'm supposed to do.

While this medium is for the beloved community to be inspired, most often I address from my own experiences of family, faith, historic events, organizations and music. All things that continue to make me the woman I am in this blessed gift of life.

I grew up in Brooklyn, NY -if you didn't already know. My mom exposed me to so much diversity living in the city.  I feel as some have experienced, Brooklyn is always in the house! Meaning we are everywhere. So wherever you are I want you to be inspired all the way from Brooklyn to your part of the world.

In the near future you will find volunteer opportunites, events, campaigns and at times relevant news in the posts. I tend to focus on  grassroots topics of people, places and things. I feel everyday people have lots to offer that most people can identify with than someone or something out of their current reach. -It's also an act of giving thanks for what we have and where we are right now.

Are you a Community Ambassador?

ThresholdWorld is looking for 2 people from each of the 5 boroughs of NYC to help represent. You know the one that knows all of the community happenings. The one abreast in politics, always at the community board meetings or know what occured at the meeting. The one that doesn’t mind taking folks on historic and personal tours of the neighborhood as well. If you know a person with these qualities have them blessmelanie@gmail.com to join team ThresholdWorld as we go through new wide open doors in every season! We'll walk through old ones as well to show some community members what was there all along for their use.

Everyone is welcome to join ThresholdWorld at Rapha Center located at 78 Saratoga Avenue Brooklyn, NY for Black Giving Day on Tuesday, August 28th 7:00pm-9:00pm. $28 contributions are being asked from each attendee as we commemorate historic events of August 28th with a goal of $1,120. Making this goal will cover space for 11 organizations to host community events at the center into the fall season.

This is just the begining. We must start somewhere. Be blessed!

MEET & GREET CHANGE!

Blessed Autumn World!-As we begin to transition from warm to cooler weather we'll learn of opportunities to rededicate ourselves in community initiatives. I've listed some common and perhaps unknown ways to participate in this post. Did you know that your local Police Precinct has meetings with the community each month? In all five boroughs of New York City there is a Community Council. Check your part of the world for meetings and engagement with local police departments. Learn what the department has achieved, ask your questions, learn how you might even be able to participate in some initiative. You'd be surprised what you may learn! The local police department usually has representation at your Monthly local Community Board Meeting . New businesses, road work, zoning issues and more are discussed at these important meetings. Local elected officials and/or their reps attend these meetings as well. You'd get info about their initiatives in your community. Remember ...

How Do You Repair the World?

National Service Shabbat with Geralynn Lane Five years ago... a table was prepared for me to meet  new friends.  The picture above is the day that started it all; actually, it was the preparation for this day. My partner at the podium is Geralynn Lane, not pictured (yet in the audience) is Yusyin Hsin. We’d all been working with NYC Service at partnering agencies. There was an opportunity to attend a National Service Shabbat. I was intrigued by this idea to celebrate service through Jewish custom and belief. As opposed to a formal grace over the food, Geralynn and I led the audience into a moment of gratitude, setting the tone for the evening. There were many progressive young people present. We listened to one another and shared our stories. It was a safe space. Our common share was the gratitude in meeting one another through service.   I grew up in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Honestly the only connection that I had with my Jewish neighbors was my parent’s l...

The Power of Today!

"Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today. Let us begin.” -Mother Teresa My name is Melanie Shaleya Lewis. My purpose on this blog is to make you want to get up and swing into positive action! Especially those of us in Faith. We all know that many churches are not connected in communities as years ago. We'll continue to uphold the assembling of ourselves in fellowship, yet we need to invite and be involved in the communities in which we serve God. 'Love they neighbor as yourself' is the second great commandment.- Mark 12:31 . No worries though.-'The time is always right to do what is right'-Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. I have a passion for service, events, international relations, politics and education. Yet Faith is my foundation. It all began as a child. My mother would take my siblings and I to many interesting places. We'd be exposed to great diversity in our City of New York. Camps in China Town, excursions to protest in...
