Rise Up!

Yours Truly!-Melanie

Rise Up!- Video Version of Text

Psalm 45 says 'my tongue is the pen of a ready writer'. Every time I write creation occurs. Be blessed.

Today is Easter Sunday 2020 and no one would've imagined that churches would have no congregation in pews today. Fifth Ave would have no hats on display and no major egg hunts would take place in our communities. Clearly our vision for 2020 did not entail being separate from co-workers, extended family members and friends.

Yet the need to stay safe at home has saved lives. More cooked meals are being prepared. More attention is being given to immediate family members. Provisions have also been made in financial relief so that more can focus on being well. We thank our medical workers for providing care during this time and always.

Hopefully by this weekend more of us were able to begin shedding off our old selves. The one that didn't pay attention to the details of who we are and why we are here. The reason we work and provide and share our gifts with the world all starts with making a difference at home and within ourselves.

So today the colorful hunt of Easter eggs in homes present family fun. Many acknowledge the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and his acts of love to save the world from the wrongs of the past and future. We also celebrate Passover and the journey of Israelites out of slavery to freedom from ancient Egypt. Through each trial there is tradition.

These traditions remain in our homes today as well those that have transitioned are in our hearts. The lessons and love we've shared with them and their legacies will not be forgotten. We honor their lives and gifts. Their lessons and memory will live in us as we continue our journey and share their story.
Today we rise through our current experience. Though this experience we see the areas in which we've been lacking and can work to improve. After working on ourselves and our homes then we can roll our concern over into our communities and the world.

We see the areas that need more hospitals and will be able to work on building them. We see the shortages in supplies so our companies can produce them. We see how low level criminals were released during the pandemic. Perhaps we need not imprison them. We see that in- person voting can be replaced to electronic and mail. We can learn from changes in the census by going online.

By experiencing the challenges during this global pandemic we see that we are a solution.  We will Rise and build a better world one home at a time.

I wish for you Peace in the midst of the pandemic.

I rise! Peace.

MEET & GREET CHANGE!

Blessed Autumn World!-As we begin to transition from warm to cooler weather we'll learn of opportunities to rededicate ourselves in community initiatives. I've listed some common and perhaps unknown ways to participate in this post. Did you know that your local Police Precinct has meetings with the community each month? In all five boroughs of New York City there is a Community Council. Check your part of the world for meetings and engagement with local police departments. Learn what the department has achieved, ask your questions, learn how you might even be able to participate in some initiative. You'd be surprised what you may learn! The local police department usually has representation at your Monthly local Community Board Meeting . New businesses, road work, zoning issues and more are discussed at these important meetings. Local elected officials and/or their reps attend these meetings as well. You'd get info about their initiatives in your community. Remember ...

How Do You Repair the World?

National Service Shabbat with Geralynn Lane Five years ago... a table was prepared for me to meet  new friends.  The picture above is the day that started it all; actually, it was the preparation for this day. My partner at the podium is Geralynn Lane, not pictured (yet in the audience) is Yusyin Hsin. We’d all been working with NYC Service at partnering agencies. There was an opportunity to attend a National Service Shabbat. I was intrigued by this idea to celebrate service through Jewish custom and belief. As opposed to a formal grace over the food, Geralynn and I led the audience into a moment of gratitude, setting the tone for the evening. There were many progressive young people present. We listened to one another and shared our stories. It was a safe space. Our common share was the gratitude in meeting one another through service.   I grew up in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Honestly the only connection that I had with my Jewish neighbors was my parent’s l...
