On Wednesday I experienced the opportunity of sharing higher education opportunities with employees of Mount Sinai Hospital. I felt blessed to share resources with professionals that serve to care for the well being of so many. Thanks so much again to the Mount Sinai Hospital Diversity and Inclusion Council and 1199 SEIU.
During this engaging event I met Hayley Gardiner of Mount Sinai Center for Spirituality and Health. I was intrigued by this area of the hospital and went over for more information.
Hayley kindly offered me lavender oil for my wrists. It was refreshing to breathe in the aroma. It was cleansing. Healthline.org defines Aromatherapy as a holistic healing treatment that uses natural plant extracts to promote health and well-being. Sometimes it’s called essential oil therapy. Aromatherapy uses aromatic essential oils medicinally to improve the health of the body, mind, and spirit. It enhances both physical and emotional health.
Hayley also gave me a pocket card which folds. It has lily pads on the outside cover. Inside was the following 20 second Self Care Exercise:
On the other side of the card was the Serenity Prayer
God, grant me the serenity
To accept the things I cannot change,
The courage to change the things I can,
And the wisdom to know the difference.
How pleasing to the senses are lavender oil, a short self care practice and a prayer. Which ever you choose for your spirit to be well is simply awesome! "We know that diagnosis and treatment can affect your spirit or soul as much as your body. As multi -faith chaplains, we provide support to patients, families, and staff of all belief systems." Hayley had directed me to the website for more information as I looked over the centers brochure.
"Mount Sinai’s chaplains help people of all faiths find meaning, healing, hope, and comfort while experiencing the challenges of life. We seek to provide clarity for decision-making, inspiration, and release from stress by facilitating a feeling of connection to a Higher Power, God, the Universe, the Creator, or that which is beyond us all. Ultimately we hope to help people achieve a sense of balance and inner peace."
There are two chapels as well at the following locations:
The Hatch Interdenominational Chapel
On the website one will also learn of a Multi-faith Initiative on Community and Health Program.
In this initiative there's a facilitation of health education programs, wellness events, health screenings, and members of community and faith-based organizations are helped in gaining access to health care throughout the Mount Sinai Health System. "Mindful of the social determinants of health, we work to decrease health care disparities. We strive to promote health while respecting the myriad faith traditions in a cultural competent manner."

- Breathe, pause, breathe again, Let your shoulders relax. Let you jaw relax. Let your feet relax
- Focus on a water lily for 7 seconds.
- Take another deep breath, and slowly breathe it out saying to yourself: "May I be well, may I be at peace, may I be at ease."
On the other side of the card was the Serenity Prayer

I was excited to share this post as they also have community Engagement. "At the Center for Spirituality and Health, we operate the Health through Early Awareness and Learning (HEAL) Project, which has helped congregations get the word out about detecting early signs of health complications. Project HEAL helps educate, empower, and connect YOU with resources to get screened for your health." On the website one will also learn of a Multi-faith Initiative on Community and Health Program.
